WELCOME OUR OWN DESI SUPERMAN

It's Friday (June 23). I get up as usual around 7 in the morning and am surprised to see my nine-year-old son awake and sitting beside my bed. Being his summer holidays he normally sleeps till late, but he has been awake and waiting for long today. After wishing good morning, he presents his wish before me: 'Daddy, can we go out to watch 'Krrish' today?' And he is not the only child in this country (India) that goes crazy about cinema and cricket.
Millions of families have the same request from their children. Everyone wants to witness his or her desi superman's avatar on silver screen. The butterflies might be making rounds in the stomachs of the Roshan family members. After giving two continuous hits in 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai' and 'Koi Mil Gaya', producer-director Rakesh Roshan teams up again with his son Hrithik this time to create a sort of history in Indian cinema.

The litmus test for the Roshans is also a qualifier for Hindi cinema to show whether it changes with the time and has guts to lock horns with international cinema. It was back in 'Sholay' when Sippys brought in special technical team from Hollywood to shoot train chase sequence and now Roshans have brought in technical crew from America and China to shoot superpowers of this desi superman coined as 'Krrish' (short from of Krishna). 'Krrish' is a departure from routine cinema in many ways. If 'Phir Hera Pheri' has bagged the title of being a successful sequel film in Hindi Cinema, the same director in Hindi cinema will remember 'Krrish' as first successful sequel film.

'Krrish' takes off from where Rakesh Roshan left in 'Koi Mil Gaya'. Rohit Mehra marries with his fiancée (Preity Zinta) and the couple is blessed with a child, Krishna (Hrithik Roshan). He lives a normal life in the hills of northern India and is oblivious of his past and future. He is happy with his present where he can walk freely on green grass, run with wild animals, cross rivers like a swan and rule the nature if he so wishes.

But everything is normal until he meets a beautiful girl known as Priya (Priyanka Chopra). While trying to save her life, he loses his heart to her. The love blossoms between the two and it's his love that takes 'Krrish' on a new journey in the world. He follows her to Singapore, and it is here that he meets his real destination. 'Krrish' is bestowed with supernatural powers and is destined to save the world; save it from the clutches of a wicked scientist Dr. Siddhant Arya (Naseeruddin Shah) who is in the process of controlling the world with his experiments.

What starts as a routine love story changes into a battle of good versus evil? However, there is only one man who can challenge Dr. Siddhant Arya's intentions, and that is Krrish. It is during this battle that the real superman in Krrish comes out in the open and shows to the world that he is an extraordinary person. Apart from these three characters there are more people in the fray and most important among them is 'Krrish's grandmother (Rekha) who at last narrates to his child the real story about miracles.

'Krrish' has been the most awaited film of the year and it has created a record by releasing the movie with 750 prints. Theatres are running a dozen shows a day to cash in the curiosity among the people to watch its characters. The film has opened with huge cash inflow as its advance booking started as early as on Sunday last. Rakesh Roshan is the only director after Yash Chopra in Hindi cinema to move with the time and realize the taste of the viewers. Having started way back as director in 'Khudgarz', Rakesh Roshan has traveled too far as a filmmaker. Films like 'Khoon Bhari Maang' and 'Karan Arjun' are only few examples to prove his credentials. With 'Krrish' he proves once again that the best way to survive in the present age is to think about future, and 'Krrish' is the novel example in this respect.

With the help of Sachin Bhowmick, Honey Irani, Robin Bhatt and Akash Khurana, Rakesh Roshan has created a story that is a perfect launch pad for desi superhero. To see his dreams come true on screen he hires none other than Tony Ching Siu Tung from Hong Kong for stunt scenes and to fill the gap between the real and reel life he also brings in SFX specialists - Marc Kolbe and Craig Mumma - from America. Santosh Thundiyil excels in cinematography and Salim-Sulaiman once again comes out with marvelous background scores. Having arranged the best in thier fields, Rakesh Roshan has perfected a drama on the celluloid. But all this could have gone haywire if Hrithik was not there. His physique, his movements and his attire, everything is perfect for a role like this and if you think Hrithik is all glow and no guts, just wait for the climax of the film where you see Hrithik as an actor.

'Krrish' is an out an out Hrithik's film; every other actor is shadowed first by his charm and later by his action sequences. His appearance and fitness for the roles only adds to his charisma. Kids have loved him in his previous movies and this film will only enhances his jadoo among them. Priyanka enters into the big league with 'Krrish' and though she does not have much to do in the film, she proves her utility in romantic scenes in beautiful locations. The love chemistry works on the music catalyst rendered by Rajesh Roshan.

To bolo to bolo kya kiya is already a chartbuster and Aao Sunaye Pyaar Ki Ek Kahani despite being a rehashed version of his own composition in 'Koyla' (Ghunghat Mein Chanda..) works better this time. Among other actors, Naseer is once again at his best and what to talk of Rekha, she mesmerises people, even at this age. On the whole, 'Krrish' is another money-spinner for Roshan and it can well surpass the record of 'Rang De Basanti' in terms of collections. Holidays were never so rosy for Bollywood. Amen!
